History
The Richmond
Rapids are a year round swim club located in Richmond, British
Columbia, Canada. The club is composed of approximately 250
swimmers and 175 families with a full time Director of Swimming,
Head Age Group Coach, Developmental Coach, I Can Swim Supervisor
and 15 part time coaches. The club supports the coaching staff with
a volunteer Board of Directors and two part time staff.
The Rapids were formed in 1999 as an amalgamation of 2 existing
Richmond Swim Clubs - the Richmond Racers and the Aquanauts, clubs
that had been in existence for 15 and 25 years.
The Rapids offer programs including learning to swim, age group
swimming, national, international and masters. Swimmers with a
disability and Special Olympics swimmers are integrated into the
various programs dependent on their age group and needs.
The Rapids host two major swim meets a year - Fast
Swim on the first weekend in December which offers heats
and finals in a Short Course (25m) setting. This meet has
qualifying times and special events such as the 50 free Eliminator
and the Mystery 200 IM. In April we offer the West Coast
Open which is a Long Course (50M) with limited qualifying times
to allow as many swimmers as possible to experience Long Course
racing.
